Scouting NY readers ventured guesses: Coliseum Books? Brentano’s? The Strand? The Barnes & Noble textbook annex on 5th Ave. and 18th St.? I wrote in suggesting the possibility of Doubleday Books. In my Year in Review: 1970 post, I pointed out that Doubleday Books had appeared in two of the #1 movies of that year, The Boys in the Band and The Owl and the Pussycat.
I didn’t know for sure, but it struck me that Doubleday Books had to have been a pretty big deal when Annie Hall was made. (It was located at 724 Fifth Avenue — today it’s a Prada.)
Scouting NY, having gone to the trouble of tracking down a copy of The Boys in the Band, has concluded that it was indeed Doubleday Books. Here’s the comparison image from that movie:
